Dominic Magnus has managed to escape Klaus' grasp, at the same time stealing some four hundred megagrams of currency from right under his twin brother's nose. Best of all, the maniacal Colonel is left thinking Dom and the penetration team was killed. So now that they have money, they need a corporate base of operations in order to use it effectively against the TEC invasion of Bakunin. The problem is that they have to acquire a company without tipping Klaus off that they are alive. And in the meantime, Tetsami has found a large mercenary army gathering on the other side of the mountains. What's their role in this affair, and how can she tell the rest when vehicle and airwave traffic is so heavily monitored?
This book benefits, and suffers, from the same attributes as the last one. The characters are good, they are believable, and the pacing is generally good. People figure things out not too soon to be credible nor too late to keep my interest. Action scenes are competently done, though it's never edge-of-the-seat reading.
In other words, it's a good story. But somehow it just never reaches that extra level that is needed to make me truly enthusiastic about it. Reading the previous book, Profiteer, is almost a requirement in order to mot be left wondering how all this came to be. And it's worth buying if you see it. But it's missing something.
