This book would more properly have been titled, "The Gathering Storm," or maybe, "The Building Forces." Something along those lines. It mostly consists of political manuevering and consolidation of forces. Rand prepares to attack Sammael in Illian. The exiles, the Little Tower, prepare their political and military campaign against the Aes Sedai who still hold the White Tower. Elayne and Nynaeve prepare to... well, several things, actually. Mat and Egwene rejoin the exiles, one of them in a startling role. And the Forsaken prepare for their own campaigns.
There are some truly important events that occur, but they don't really start until at least halfway through, if not two-thirds. The climax is definitely a climax, but it's very short, if bloody.
First-time readers will actually probably not derive as much fun from this as repeat readers. I found it more than tolerable, but part of that is because I knew that somewhere ahead some of the memorable events would be coming. Anticipation helped. But the series definitely has lost its pacing compared to the first one, or even the first three. It's probably about here that you'll start hearing - and voicing - complaints about how long it's taking to get anywhere.
