Rand al'Thor is the Dragon Reborn. That much was made clear to the world at the end of The Great Hunt, even if he hasn't proclaimed it himself yet. But he is beginning to - very, very reluctantly - accept that he is who he is. And if he is the Dragon Reborn, he'll need to go to Tear, to sieze Callendor, an ancient magical artifact, the taking of which is a major sign of the Dragon's return.

Despite the title, the book hardly follows Rand at all. Early in the book he breaks away from the band of people following him, and for much of the time after that he is entirely out of the picture. Instead, the book splits into three threads. One follows Perrin and Moirane as they pursue Rand across the countryside. Another follows the Elayne, Egwene, and Nynaeve as they train in the White Tower, and leave it again on a most dangerous quest. The third follows Mat, now free of the cursed dagger but not of his destiny. And all paths lead to Tear.

Somewhat like its predecessor, The Dragon Reborn consists mostly of shifting playing pieces around while instructing the reader. Which isn't to say things don't happen! Only that there isn't the frantic pace of the chases and battles of the first book. No, things happen. More than enough things happen to hold a reader's interest, I feel. Naturally, this is a must-read if you intend to complete the series.
