At the start of book nine, there is, as usual, a lot going on. Most notably, Egwene was about to invade Tar Valon with her rebel Aes Sedai and their army. They rested a month, and at the end of book eight stepped through a portal to just outside the city to begin their siege. The book almost ignores this plotline, though. As far as i can tell, most of it takes place in that month of rest, travelling back in time as it were. I wish, if Jordan had planned to ignore the invasion, that he had forgone the drama of them beginning it in the last book.

There is at least one other important event that occurred at the end of book eight that book nine shoves aside: Faile's capture by the Shaido. It's not totally ignored, but after a chapter or two involving it at the start the rest of the book concerns other events. Some things should not be ignored for so long.

Winter's Heart mostly concerns Mat, Rand, and Elayne. Mat is confined in Ebou Dar not by prison bars, but an overly amorous queen. But his destiny awaits there, as the Daughter of the Nine Moons finally arrives. Elayne is struggling to hold on to the Lion Throne. And Rand is doing his best to lay false trails, hunt down rogue Asha'man, and prepares to clean Saidin.

Yes, a lot is going on, but very little actualy gets resolved. Some progress, little resolution, and again the first half or so is barely eventful at all. Plus, as I said, some important elements went almost ignored. Were it not for the climax - the last chapter, really - it might even get a lower rating.
