The Wheel of Time is a book series, high fantasy that rivals Tolkien in depth. It is so deep, in fact, that Jordan provided this book as a kind of helper. And it really does help.

The book is not itself a story. This is a mix between universe bible, glossary, who's-who, and atlas. It tells the history of the world, the political situation of the nations the books take place in, and other things. Be warned: despite appearing first on this list, this helper came out well after the series was started, and using it as a primer by reading it before reading the series itself is ill-advised. There are details given inside that are meant to be mysteries until they are revealed. The book can be a major spoiler.

Still, if you're willing to risk it, or are five or six books into the series, it's a great addition to the novels. It's helpful and, plain cover notwithstanding, it's full of absolutely beautiful illustrations. One of the pictures is a map not just of the particular part of the world that the books take place in, but of the entire planet. I'd always wondered what it looked like, and if you have too then you should get this. It's the only place that actually shows you.
