It's just another normal day in the kingdom of Possletum, which means Skeeve and Aahz are at each other's throats in the way only a master and apprentice can be. But the arrival of an old friend changes all that. Tananda takes Skeeve on a whirlwind tour of the more remote dimensions. But this is Skeeve wr're talking about. Nothing ever goes as plannedfor him, and this is no exception. Suddenly Skeeve is embroiled on the caper of his life - with Tananda as the grand prize!
This isn't one of my favorites of the series. The plot is a bit more contrived, for one thing, and Asprin's wordplay is beginning to hit Xanth-like levels. The dimension of Jahk? Veygus and Ta-hoe? Bleah. And while Skeeve, the main character, does have a very few moments to shine, he mostly tags along and lets everyone else tell him what to do. The story isn't as funny, or as fun.
Which isn't the same as saying it's bad, or no fun at all. The book retains the light feel of the previous volumes, and it is still amusing in places. It's also very interesting to see some of the strange, strange worlds in this multiverse.
But wt's hard to say why this book didn't quite make the mark, this is, as usual, an amusing book and a quick read. It's still worth buying, or at least reading. I enjoyed it. I just didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped.
