The crew of M.Y.T.H. Inc. has been recalled to Klah to put the reins on Queen Hemlock's sudden warmongering. Stopping a war is nothing new, but doing it without Skeeve or Aahz certainly is. But they have a plan. Everyone has their roles, and for Guido and Nunzio it's to enlist. After all, what happens when Mob enforcers start to make an impression on an army? Total chaos, of course!
Well, maybe not...
The plot of this particular chapter of MythAdventures reminds me a lot of an old film starring, I think, the old-time caudville comedy duo, Laurel and Hardy. One of them had a toothache and wanted to to go jail, to take advantage of the free jail hospital, but no matter what he did he couldn't get arrested. Every attempt to break the law somehow turned out to be heroic, or at least a good deed. Such was the case here, wherein the cousins' efforts kept producing results totally out of whack with their intentions.
With this in mind, it wasn't really all that hard to see how things would go. In parts it was downright predictable. But, just like that old film, it was still good fun. The text is light and the antics of Guido and Nunzio in the army are very enjoyable.
M.Y.T.H. Inc. In Action breaks records, as well, being the first book in the series to top two hundred pages. This also continues Asprin's trend towards less episodic adventures. The last two books led directly to this plot, and the story here makes references to several others. And it leads directly to the next. As the author himself explains, this allows him to paint a larger picture, even though he still has to show it in pieces. It definitely has a more integrated feel to it all.
But while it is a nice, fun read, there's nothing extraordinary. It is amusing, to be sure, and definitely falls under light comedy, but it simply lacks that certain extra that makes it something to rave over. I did enjoy this one, and it does continue the story nicely, however, so there's good reasons to give this one a look and none to avoid it. Espcially if you've actually read the last few books in the series, at which point this becomes almost mandatory.
