The summary of this story is very simple: Vader the soldier manages to get a magic sword made for him. But the wizard was... upset, and while the spell works, the more he uses the sword, the closer he draws to his ultimate doom. The sword also has the nice bonus of keeping him alive, until that doom hits. Nothing will kill him but it.

But plenty of things will hurt him, maim him, age him...

I rather liked this story. In part it is because I didn't read it first in the Legends of Ethshar series, so it was very interesting to see the first book, which shows what the world was like hundreds of years before many of the other stories take place and when the Great War was very recent. And part of it is just the fun of watching Valder deal with events. It's a well-written tale, with plenty of slow areas but few boring ones.
