It is two years after Tavi foiled an assassination attempt on Gaius Sextus, and the realm is in no less peril than it was. The childless First Lord is tired of reacting to his adversaries' moves, and decides it is time to make them dance to his tune. The reaction he provokes, however, may well be the beginnings of a civil war. And Tavi, thought posted safely to the side, finds himself once again right in the think of things, facing a threat to the realm far larger than anyone could expect to counter with five legions of Aleran troops at his back. And Tavi has only one...
Cursor's Fury contains plenty of action — naturally. Butcher is very skilled at putting pressure on his characters and making sure the readers feel it. There's a lot going on here, and a lot can go wrong very easily. Meanwhile, there's plenty of battles, and Butcher has already proven in past books of the series that he is well able to come up with some interesting, even original tactics while still keeping things tight and believable.
The author is beginning to bring out some of the setting's secrets, as well, and we learn something of Tavi's aunt Isana's past in this volume. And some of Tavi's, as well. In some ways the revelations are a bit cliche, especially when considered in general terms. To be honest, I was expecting something along these lines back when I read the first book. But Butcher does it well, here, and there's enough details changed that it is still plenty interesting.
I was, however, a bit distured by how quickly time sometimes passes in this book. Sometimes three weeks might pass between chapters, and rarely did it feel like it. It was simply, blink, and three weeks are declared to have passed. Still, that was the only real complaint I could muster. By and large this is an excelent book that copntinues to develop the rich setting of Alera.
