Departures is an anthology. The twenty stories it contains were written between 1985 and 1992, and as such the style is pretty modern. I had no problems on that count. There's nothing quite like reading a story set in 2350 that uses slide rules to destroy one's suspension of disbelief.
The quality of the stories varies, of course. The first is particularly slow, though if you understand it it's very thought-provoking. The good ones counteract those well enough, though, to make the book worth a look. You probably won't like every story, but there's enough variety of content that you'll probably like some of them. I liked most of them, myself.
