This is not at at all the novelization of the Disney animated movie that came out a few years back. Oh no. This is a book about war between worlds, possibly between universes. Something in Cambodia - and the Bermuda Triangle, and other places - is trying to come through, via gates that are miles on a side. Anything and anyone that enters the preternatural fogbank is killed in very nasty ways. And if it is not stopped soon, these gates threaten to expand to cover the planet.

This is a pretty good action book. Imagine if Tom Clancy had tried to write a bit more fantastically than he does and you'll have some idea of what Donegan attempted. He didn't quite succeed, but it is still a good novel. It combines high tech, super-high tech that's been secretly developed, and of course alien tech from the other side. The deaths were detailed enough to make me squirm in a few places, which certainly helps give the reader the notion that these things are very, very bad news. One aspect that starts out as a minus and becomes a plus is the idea of psychic phenomena. But Donegan handles it well, making those who have it almost as ignorant of what they have as the general public.

This is pretty good. But although I'm hard-pressed to find actual, specific faults, I just never quite liked it well enough to get a better rating.
