The Malwa invasion of Persia is not going well. Belisarius has managed in the last book to defeat a large army. The siege at Babylon is untenable. But the Malwa are not done yet. They still hold a major port town, and several hundred thousand enemy troops are based there. Meanwhile, Sanga's Rajput force is a threat to the north.
There's nothing really new in this book. But in this series, "more of the same" is hardly a bad thing. Belisarius is his usual brilliant self - though there is one battle that proves even he can blunder in a major way. There's more battles than usual, but not many more. The rest is plotting and scheming, as is normal in the series. But I was rarely bored, and never for long. There is still a lot of exposition and side information, but it usually helps the tone of the book; and frankly, if you've read this far in, you're not going to mind it by now.
Once again, this pair has written a superb story of historic military fiction. If you liked The General series, or of course if you've read the previous books in this one, then check it out.
