I usually like books about people from our time/world meeting up with people from other times or worlds. The juxtoposition usually makes for natural storytelling. But sometimes it doesn't work.
I imagine that this book was supposed to be humorous, in the vein of Terry Pratchet's work. Lots of absurdism, weird statements, etc. The inconsistencies and idiocies might have been excusable if it had worked, had been funny. But it isn't. It's just plain stupid. It's hard to believe this future could ever come about. If the disasters that we are told about happened, I can't believe it would end up like this. And it just goes wrong from there.
And worst of all, like I said, it's not funny.
