A new researcher shows up at Darya's institute, proposing a new theory for what the Builders are - one she strongly disagrees with. Luis Nenda and Atvar the Cecropian manage to escape Genizee and the Zardalu, but now they need to figure out what to do next. And everywhere, Builder artifacts are changing, even disappearing.

This novel concludes the Heritage Universe. And it's a good conclusion. We finally learn what the Builders are, and what the purpose of the Artifacts was. Some of the characters are noticeably different from the start of the series, but it is not an inconsistancy, it is growth. And it is quite plausible growth.

I rather liked how Sheffield explains things. It is improbable, but plausible enough given the setup. And although he says in a foreword that this is the last book in the setting, the ending argues that there may be more coming - albeit with plots not centering on the Builders. I for one would not mind seeing how Rebka's plans go.
