At Summertide, a great big... something came out of the center of the planet Quake, to fly off to the outer system. Now Darya Lang and the rest need to get out there and investigate.
Nearly all the characters from the first book are back, along with two more: an "embodied computer", and one of the system administrators. Once more they are both distinct: one is fairly cowardly, and the other is essentially Data in mentality though not in certain details. The story takes off running, since there is something right there that just begs to be looked into. The plot consists more of what they find than of trying to figure out how to find it, making things move along well.
Another nice thing is that we get our first hints on what the Builders actually were, and what their intentions are. Deep revelations like this are always pleasant, especially when they are presented after more than a book's length of story. And some of the answers raise more questions, while other discoveries are just plain unpleasant to the characters.
It is nearly essential to read book one before reading this. Nearly, but not quite. It'll certainly be a big help, though. This is a great follow-up, and the ending is a nice cliffhanger.
