The humans have joined the fight against the Amplitur, throwing their full weight of arms against the mind-controlling menace. And the Amplitur are being forced back, a fact they don't much appreciate. Something must be done to counter these super soldiers!
Ranji is one of the pieces to their solution. With their skills at genetic manipulation, they were able to devise a race similar to humanity in strength, dexterity, and outright sneakiness. The perfect counter. But when he is captured by Weave soldiers, exactly what had been done is uncovered.
This is a great look at the other side of the war, and reveals a few lonf-suspected but never proven allegations about the Amplitur. It also progresses the war nicely. There are battles, of course, but Foster doesn't go into major detail like Ringo or Weber would. This is space opera, telling stories of people in the war more than the war itself. But it's very good, very fun space opera. And very pro-human; while it doesn't glorify war, Foster clearly doesn't think anyone who participates is evil.
