Harris Greene is a loser, in the most literal sense of the word. He's a professional kickboxer that loses his fights. He loses his girlfriend. And now he's lost his world. While trying to protect said girlfriend from a kidnapping attempt, he is transported to a weird parallel world that looks like what might happen if the world of faerie became enamored with 1930s gangster films.
I loved this thing. There's a major portion of "fish out of water" element present in the first third or half or so. But the main plot isn't about Harris trying to adjust, or even about saving Gaby (the girlfriend) from those who want to get her. It's about figuring out why they want her in the first place, and trying to thwart the bad guys' plans. There's action, romance, action, mystery, action, magic, and - oh, yeah - action.
The only bad thing I was able to find in the entire book was one scene, in which a typo has someone speak a line that could only have been spoken by someone else. Not only is the supposed speaker not actually present, but he and the true speaker sit on opposite sides of the good guy/bad guy fence. For a short while I thought there was a betrayal coming, but it was just a typo. Readers probably won't even notice it unless it's pointed out to them.
Other than that one thing, though - which is more a typo than any real problem - this is perfect. I can well imagine this as a summer blockbuster, if anyone buys the movie rights. I hope someone does. Good stuff.
