If you're not familiar with Greek mythology, you probably missed the reference in the title. Galatea is the statue that was so good it came to life, eventually becoming the artist's wife as I recall. In this, it is a painting that comes to life... and more. The character finds he has the ability to do multiple things with his talent. Including the one already mentioned, he can enter the scenes he paints, travel from painting to painting, and other talents. I won't list them all, because there really is a lot.
Which is, I think, the books only major downside. The main character is just too powerful. The enemy is also powerful, as he has the same talents, but enemies are supposed to be powerful. It would have been nice if he spread the powers out among several good guys, so that one character was best at moving between paintings, another bringing things to life, etc. What was written was written very well, and it's a lot of fun to see these artists duel with their imaginations brought to life. But I think it could have been made a little more dramatic by making the power disparity between good and bad guys larger.
